Insufficient Land - Chiang Dao, Thailand - 2012

One of the most important issues facing rural households in northern Thailand is landlessness and fractionalization of agriculture holdings. Wealthy people, local or not, are buying huge lands, most commonly rice fields, and unemployed villagers are being exploited with an underpaid salary to work in these lands. All its goods are being exported for the owner’s own benefice, leaving the locals victim of poverty and landlessness.

These are the images of those villagers’ children, living in poor conditions, but still finding a small peace of land to play in and be happy. They gather in front of Chiang Dao’s temple every day, their only public space that they can call their own.
